  • Kohli has been giving more importance to Test cricket than limited overs cricket.

New Delhi. Legendary spinner Shane Warne on Monday said Virat Kohli has been an “inspirational captain” in his own right but without his passion for the traditional format of the game, Test cricket’s popularity in many countries would have declined. Kohli had recently relinquished the Test captaincy after a 1-2 loss in the three-match series against a weak South Africa side. But the former leg-spin wizard said Kohli’s biggest contribution has been prioritizing the toughest format of cricket.

During the promotion of his documentary ‘Shane’, which is being aired on ‘Book My Show’, Warne told PTI-Bhasha exclusively, “Virat was a very good captain and he inspired his teammates. I think he could have improved in strategic aspects but as far as captaincy is concerned, he inspired his teammates all the time.

Warne said that the way Kohli promoted Test cricket, his respect for the former India captain has increased manifold.

The former bowler, who took 709 wickets in Test cricket, said, “First of all I would like to say that I have a lot of respect for Virat Kohli. I think he is a brilliant cricketer and a great ambassador for the game. I think we all should thank Virat Kohli and BCCI for taking Test cricket forward. This is the top format of the game.

Warne believes that in the era of T20 leagues, people would have been disillusioned with the format if Kohli and the Indian Cricket Board had not pushed for maintaining the importance of Test cricket.

“If you want to test yourself in cricket, it can be done in Test cricket. Test is the toughest format of our game. If India and Virat Kohli had not given importance to Test cricket, then many other countries probably would have turned away from it.

Warne said, “I am thankful to Virat and BCCI for the way he is playing and he is fantastic for the game.”
