Wasim Rizvi, former chairman of the Shia Central Waqf Board, is often seen and heard in the headlines for his controversial statements. Once again Rizvi is in the media headlines. This time the reason is not a controversial statement but a matter of his conversion. Wasim Rizvi, former chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Shia Central Waqf Board, has left Islam and formally converted to Hinduism. According to reports, Rizvi was formally converted to Hinduism by Mahant Narasimha Anand Saraswati of Dasna temple on Monday. Rizvi had said in his will that his body should be cremated according to traditional Hindu rituals and not buried after his death. Rizvi also mentioned that his funeral pyre should be lit by Narasimha Anand Saraswati, a Hindu saint from Dasna temple in Ghaziabad. The new name of Syed Wasim Rizvi will now be Jitendra Narayan Singh Tyagi. Now his gotra is Vatsa.

The former head of the Shia Waqf Board was embroiled in controversy after he filed a petition in the Supreme Court to remove 26 verses from the Quran, alleging that the verses encourage terrorism and jihad. Rizvi had released a video in which he said that he feared for his life as several radical Islamist organizations had called for his beheading. Rizvi had claimed in his petition that objectionable verses were added to the Holy Quran much later.

Rizvi mentioned in his petition, “These verses were added to the Qur’an by the first three Caliphs to aid in the expansion of Islam by war.” According to him, radical Islamists and terrorist groups use these verses of the Quran to justify jihad. Rizvi also said that these verses are being used to mislead uneducated Muslim youth, persuading them for jihad.

However, the apex court had dismissed the petition as frivolous and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on it. After failing to officially remove the pro-terror verses from the Qur’an, Waseem Rizvi wrote a new Islamic holy book, removing the above 26 verses from the Qur’an. On November 17, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi had filed a complaint against Waseem Rizvi for allegedly making derogatory statements against the Prophet.

Waseem Rizvi is a former member and chairman of the Shia Central Board of Waqf in Uttar Pradesh. He is best known for producing the Bollywood film Ram Ki Janmabhoomi as well as petitioning the Supreme Court of India. Rizvi is the son of a second class railway employee. He was elected councilor of the Samajwadi Party (SP) from the Kashmiri Mohalla ward of the old city of Lucknow in 2000 and became a member of the Shia Central Waqf Board in 2008. In 2012, Rizvi was expelled from the SP for six years after falling out with Shia cleric Kalbe Jawad, who accused him of misappropriating funds. Rizvi termed these allegations as “cooked” motivated by a desire to “undermine his argument”. Rizvi was later relieved from the court and reinstated.

In the complaint addressed to the Hyderabad Police Commissioner, Owaisi alleged that Rizvi has written a book in Hindi in which he defames Prophet Mohammed and used objectionable language. Owaisi had raised his objection against ‘Muhammad’, the latest book written by Rizvi, which was released on November 4 from Dasna Devi temple in Ghaziabad in the presence of Narsingh Anand Saraswati.
