New Delhi: A controversy erupted after a photo of a TMC leader posing with a gun at a government office in West Bengal’s Malda district went viral on social media. The incident happened ahead of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit to Malda.
In the photo, Mrinalini Mondal Maity, the president of Old Malda Panchayat Samiti, is seen flaunting a gun while sitting on her official chair. Maity is also the president of the district unit of TMC women’s wing, PTI reported.
TMC state general secretary Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury said an investigation would be done on the matter.
“The fire arm in the picture seems real, and the police should investigate the case. One cannot play with a gun while sitting on an official chair. Police will investigate if it is a real gun or a toy pistol. The party’s image has been dented because of such an incident,” Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury said.
Mrinalini Mondal Maity, however, said it was not a real gun but a lighter.
Meanwhile, BJP has alleged that TMC had turned the state into a dump yard of explosives.
“If she is searched, police will also get bombs and rifles. This is TMC’s culture. Police are not doing anything out of fear of losing their jobs,” PTI quoted BJP district president Gobinda Chandra Mondal as saying.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took a train to Malda last evening to attend an administrative meeting in Malda and Murshidabad.
Maity was embroiled in a controversy previously too. Earlier, her husband was accused of beating up a government official in the office of the Block Development Officer of the area.
